Jodhpur : The blue city of India

01/09/2020

The Indian city of Jodhpur is one of the most photogenic cities in all of India. The city has a center full of blue-painted houses, an impressive fortress and numerous special landmarks where your camera makes overtime.

Jodhpur is located in the desert province of Rajasthan and is a standard stop during a tour of cities such as Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner. A good place to linger for a few days, because there is plenty to see and do. From walking through the blue downtown to zip lines at the fort: these are the best things to do in Jodhpur. Book your trip with a taxi for Rajasthan tour for the economy fare.

Blue city

Jodhpur is also called the blue city of India, because of the many painted houses in the city center. The bright blue is associated with the Brahim's, the highest caste in India, but one can only guess at the real reason. Anyway, a walk through the blue streets of Jodhpur is the highlight of your stay. The blue inner city of Jodhpur is one of the most beautiful places in India.

Mehrangarh Fort

The absolute eye-catcher of Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort, which towers high above the city. This magnificent fort was built in 1460 and includes an impressive labyrinth of corridors. Within the thick walls of the fort, you can also admire various temples, gardens, and palaces. Already upon entering you will notice the beautiful murals, and the view over the city is also worth seeing. If you look closely you can see the many blue houses in the distance and the contours of the impressive Umaid Bwahan Palace.

Ziplines

You don't expect it, but right behind the fort, you can zip line very nicely. You start in the fort itself and then sweep through the dry landscape. The total course is one kilometer long and on the way, you have a great view of the surroundings. Get stuck firmly and zoom at full speed from platform to platform. Afterward you can then walk another round through the fort. Almost all hotels and guesthouses in Jodhpur can arrange this cool excursion for you.

Jaswant Thada

Just a stone's throw away from the fort is another place worth visiting: Jaswant Thada. This impressive burial monument was built for one of the former Maharajas and is made of sparkling marble. The comparison with the Taj Mahal is easily made, partly due to the architectural style, the many details and of course the function of the building. It is one of the quieter places in Jodhpur and it is surprisingly clean. A pleasant change in all hectic times in the city.

Umaid Bwahan Palace

If you have already seen the Umaid Bwahan Palace from the fort, you immediately believe that this is one of the largest palaces in the world. The ramp is made of sandstone and inspired by architectural styles such as Art Deco and the Renaissance. The huge complex has different functions and is only partly inhabited by the royal family of Jodhpur. The rest of the building is furnished as a luxury hotel and as a museum. If you want to stay overnight, it will cost you a fair amount: you pay at least 800 euros per room per night.

Toorji Ka Jhalara

Toorji Ka Jhalara, or The Stepwell, is one of the most special places in Jodhpur. This place used to be used as a water supply and these structures can be seen everywhere in Rajasthan. Zigzag steps used to get water from the well, but nowadays only children swim here. A photogenic place that is worth seeing. Above Stepwell you will find a cafe that offers a view over the source. Experience these places with a road trip from Udaipur city tour package.

Clock tower

Fair is fair: if you compare the Clock Tower with the fort or one of the other sights in Jodhpur, it will be a bit disappointing. The Clock Tower is not very large and not that impressive either. Yet it is recommended to navigate to this icon in the center because there is a special market around the tower. The Sardar market is a colorful collection of stalls with food, drinks, and souvenirs. Locals are happy to invite you for a hot chai in their store and it is, therefore, the perfect place to get to know the locals and their customs.

Traveling to Jodhpur - How to get there

Jodhpur is located in the Indian province of Rajasthan, about 600 kilometers from the city of New Delhi. To get there you can take the night train, which takes over 10 hours. Traveling by train in India is a great adventure, but has its challenges. An alternative is a plane, both Air India and Jet Airways have daily connections with New Delhi and Mumbai.

Once you arrive in Jodhpur, most of the sights are together, but for longer distances, you can take a taxi or rickshaw.
